Choose your hospital from today?
« on: Apr 01 2008, 08:34 AM »
As of today patients will have a say in where they are treated.  TV doctors are saying this will not help as patients do not know where the best hospitals are and do not have the facilities to find out.
We however know of many centres of exellence for our problems so it should be a help for us. :D
We should no longer feel guilty for asking to go outside our own area nor should there be a need to get funding sanctioned. There are however likely to be long waiting lists for the understanding well informed consultants so if you are wanting a new consultant start the process straight away.

Hi Barbara

Thats good news. I just hope the GP's are aware of this. I have had real struggles in the past to get referred to a hospital outside of our area. As you say though, the waiting times at the better hospitals are bound to increase.

Hi Barbara

This is good news if it works out, i had two ENT consultants in my area, and neither could or would help with Menieres, i actually don't think they were that clued up on it.  I found an article in a womens magazine about a lady with Menieres and how she ended up at the Leicester Balance Centre and how much they helped her, after reading it, i phoned Leicester and they said they would see me but only as a private patient because i was not from that area.  I know i had to pay, but for me, i know i have now found a fantastic Consultant that i trust completely and has done so much for me.  I really hope this works out and more people get to see the right Consultants but without the need to have to pay for it... that would be excellent, i hope this works :)

My GP gave me a choice of what ENT department to go to when I last saw him a couple of months ago.

I too was given the choice by my GP on where I wanted to see an ENT specialist, of course I chose my local as it is too difficult for me to get anywhere else (not being able to drive) Will know what mine is like this afternoon after I have seen him...
