Salt / Sodium
« on: Mar 02 2009, 07:08 PM »
Hi
I have menieres and my specialist told me on Friday to reduce my sodium intake to 2500mg per day - Does this sound right ?
Also he suggested I have the Labyrinthectomy operation as I was born deaf in my right ear (which is the one I have meniers in) is there any one out there who has already had this operation? what was it like? has it worked?
Any feed back would be great as I am getting desperate
Thanks :)

Hi Looper,
2.5g is a good low level of sodium intake. It is usual for people not on low sodium to try to keep to 6g but not wise to go down below2g as we need electrolyte balance.
I had a labyrinthectomy in 1999 and would have it done again tomorow. If you have no hearing in the affected ear you are a good candidate for this op.
However, once a destruction is done there is no going back so not an op to be rushed into.  I have not spun since the op. but that does not mean I am totally free of symptoms. I still feel off balance and due to a lazy eye I have both horizontal and vertical oscillopsia. I still struggle in busy places but just knowing that I will not spin makes this easier.
If you decide to go ahead with this I will fill in some of the details for you or you can send me a personal message for more info.
Hope this helps
Barbara

Hi there,

I couldn't agree more with what Barbara has said with regards to the low salt diet and had i have known, would have taken at least 2.5g sodium daily instead of the dangerously low 1.2g that i used to have!  Just before i was advised to try the low salt diet, my sodium intake was about 6g daily and so when i did suddenly adjust to the low dose of 1.2g/daily it made me feel ill for months and to be honest cannot say that i noticed a massive difference in my symptoms by reducing my sodium intake!  After following this strict intake of sodium and taking 5mg diuretics daily for over 6 years, my electroyte balance was completely messed up... my potassium levels were dangerously low and was on the verge of being admitted into hospital!!

Regarding the labyrinthectomy, why not try the gentamicin first?  Its less invasive..

Best wishes,

Simon

Hi Barbara / Simon

Thank you both very much for your comments.

Barbara I would very much like to get in touch with you via email but other than put my email address here I am not sure how I can give you my email.  Am I missing something?
Its probably very straight forward I will keep trying.

Karen
