What does a grommet look like?
« on: Mar 08 2018, 02:59 PM »
I think my grommet has come out but not too sure.  I was scratching my ear on two separate occasions when what looked like a black piece of grit came out.  The first time it was barely visible and the second time a slightly larger piece.  Both times it was barely visible to the eye.

When I had my last appointment the doc told me the grommet was moving and would eventually come out.  So I am assuming that it was happened.  He also told me the hole would close up and there would be no more vertigo attacks.  I find this surprising as I understand that making a hole for the grommet helped release the pressure and hence the vertigo attacks.  I have to say the grommet stayed in for about 18 months and during that time the vertigo attacks did reduce quite dramatically.  It was nice to be able to do things 'normally' again and am now anxious that they will start again, especially as I was signed off by the doctor.  So I can envisage having another (third) grommet fitted sometime in th future.

Can anyone who has had a grommet fall out explain what it looked like.  I know they are really tiny and if mine was the grommet falling out or could I have had some sort of grit in the ear?  Tinnitus and fullness are still at a high level and I presume it it will take a while for the  fluid to build up again so am keeping fingers crossed that I will have a bit more time before I have to start worrying about attacks again.

Many thanks
Linda

Have not had Grommets for MD but had them as a child. They are effectively just a small tube that goes through the eardrum to relieve pressure and fluid in the middle ear. I would expect them to be about the size of a pin head.so you would see it. perhaps what you have is in fact as simple a real piece of grit in your ear.If in doubt go to your GP who would be able to have a look and check for you.

There is a picture here https://www.earnosethroat.com.au/children-otolaryngology/grommets-in-children/

Mine is about 3mm wide

You would know it if you saw it.  Mine has come out the the ear drum, but I haven't seen it fall out yet.  I know that the ear drum hole has closed,  last time the specialist checked it was stuck to my ear drum (nice eh!).  I guess it is still there.
