Recent MRI scan
« on: Aug 05 2006, 03:49 PM »
Hello everyone, I think I mentioned a while ago that i was to have an MRI scan. Well I had it several weeks ago and will be seeing my specialistin about 10 days. Thought I had better visit my doctor before I see this man as he is a bit scary!!  Seemingly there was nothing in my notes he could talk to me about results etc. but he doodled around on his PC for a few minutes and found about 1/2 a screen of printing which he read ....and read(would this be a result of the "sharing of information " I have read about recently.  Eventually he said that he thought I would be told in 10 days that I was to have a 2nd MRI!! but with added dye as it was thought I had a Schwannoma. I thought he said Swanoma ??? and of course when I googled this yesterday, found nothing. Today I googled accoustic nerve and found the correct term!!   Got lots of results on a new search but am avoiding reading much and will await his explanation. Did notice it to be benign, does anyone know anything about this.
Hope everyone is coping with this long spell of weather, I was in town this morning and very glad to get home to my cool cottage and comfy clothes , am beginning to feel like a hermit

Hi Fiona

I think you are wise not to read too much until you speak to the consultant. From what I've read about Schwanomas, they are benign overgrowths of nerve cells affecting hearing and balance and causing tinnitus.  I think you've had your symptoms for many years so maybe they've been caused all along by this possible Schwanoma because they tend to be slow growing.  It would be something to have an explanation for what's been going on.
Let us know how you get on with the specialist.  it's a shame they hadn't thought about using the contrast dye in the first place, which would have saved some time.

Hi Fiona,
I'd go with Christina on this and wait till you've seen the main man .They tend to approach acoustic neuromas conservatively at first as they are slow growing and they are benign.I would assume the second MRI is to see how developed it is (assuming it is one that it is!) .
Fingers crossed for you and do let us know how you get on ,
Elaine xx

You're welcome Fiona! 10 days is eons to those that are waiting but compared to how long you've gone so far it's nothing and will soon pass ;)

Hi Fiona
It's good this new man is taking your symptoms seriously at any rate. Just keep doing what you're doing.

Best wishes

Hi, a brief update- I saw the specialist last week and he explained that the radiologist wanted a second look with the dye but he says he is sure there is nothing, dont know what to think so again will wait and see. Got my appointment this morning for about 10 days time-9.00 am which does not please me >:( and i have to be there 1/2 an hour before hand ,early morning not my best time!   At least this visit showed me he is human, found i could speak to him more easily and he even laughed with me at 2 issues i had with the department on my very first MRI scan and actually agreed with me that they were not very considerate so am all ready to make myself heard when I go this time ::)
  Best wishes ....Fiona

Hi Fiona

Sounds like they are being extra cautious - and also sounds like there may not be a benign tumour afterall.  Good news!  You've got enough to contend with, without worrying about that as well.

Hi Fiona

I can't imagine having to be there at 8.30 in the morning!!  I only just found out that there was one at the beginning of the day as well as the evening!   :D    I'm so glad that they don''t think there's anything there and also that they are going to double check, just to be sure.

Fingers crossed for the next appointment.   Have you thought of not going to bed the night before and then you can pretend it isn't early morning?   I'm allergic to them, I'm sure.
